Ad land’s young guns: Aditya Verma, Senior Brand Services Executive, FCB Ulka

Mumbai-based Aditya Verma is Senior Brand Services Executive at FCB Ulka. He has been with the agency for almost two and a half years.

In conversation with Adgully, Aditya Verma speaks about the skill sets required to thrive in a dynamic industry like advertising, hi success mantra, why he considers working with Nike his dream job, and more.

What particular skill sets do you think you bring to the table?

In this dynamic industry, several skills can provide a competitive edge. One crucial skill which I believe is of utmost importance is relationship building, as establishing strong connections with clients, colleagues, and industry professionals can lead to valuable collaborations and opportunities. Another essential skill is problem-solving, as the advertising landscape often presents complex challenges that require innovative solutions.

How did you join your current organisation?

I’ve always been fascinated by advertisements and their ability to tell compelling stories within a limited space. This curiosity led me to the world of advertising. Starting as an account management intern at FCB Interface, I quickly realised that this industry was not just a passion, but also a limitless opportunity for ongoing learning and enjoyment.

Icons in this field whom you look up to and how they have influenced you and your work?

I am truly privileged to have had the opportunity to work with outstanding individuals at FCB Ulka. Based on my readings on ad veteran Mr Anil Kapoor, I have learnt that he always believes that we should know the client’s business more than the client. I work towards this daily, to be their communications partner rather than just a service provider.

What are the five most productive things that you do in your everyday routine?

  • Keep a written job list to stay organised and prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Engage in industry-related conversations to stay informed and gain different perspectives.
  • Set quarterly personal and career-oriented goals and review progress daily to ensure consistent progress.
  • Unplug from my phone for 30 minutes each day and enjoy some quality “me time”.
  • Reading articles about new and upcoming gadgets to fulfil my inner tech geek.

Do you think a career in this field is a viable one in the long term?

Without a doubt! In fact, with AI already making strides in the communication business, it not only invites innovation, but also promises improved targeting, personalisation, efficiency, real-time optimisation, data-driven insights, enhanced customer experiences, and creative experimentation.

AI can greatly augment the capabilities of advertising professionals, but it cannot replicate the unique qualities that humans bring to the table. The combination of AI tools and human expertise is likely to be the most effective approach for the future of advertising.

What does it take to succeed in a career?

To have a successful career, combining hard work and curiosity is crucial. Hard work brings dedication and the drive to excel in your field. Curiosity fuels continuous learning, encouraging you to explore and adapt to change. Hard work and curiosity go hand in hand to empower your career.

What would be your advice to youngsters planning to enter this industry?

Having a perspective on consumer behaviour is important to express your views. By having a point of view, you can challenge norms and create an impact. So, feel free to have a view; it is a powerful way to make a memorable mark.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Honestly, this question always brings out my head-scratching reflex. But here’s what I do know: five years from now, I want to be recognised as an influential figure within the advertising and marketing industry, known for my ability to drive successful integrated campaigns agnostic of the medium, inspire creativity, and bring strategic vision to life.

Is there any organisation that you would like to work with in the future?

Working with a brand like Nike has always been a dream of mine, as it presents an incredible opportunity to be part of a global powerhouse known for its innovation, diversity and making a significant impact on the world of sports and lifestyle. From designing cutting-edge athletic footwear and apparel to creating ground-breaking marketing campaigns, being part of the Nike team would allow me to contribute to shaping the industry’s future.
