Centre swiftly addresses Indian spice brand bans in Hong Kong, Singapore

Following alarming reports from food regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore regarding cancer-causing ingredients found in certain products of popular Indian spice brands MDH and Everest, the Indian government has sprung into action. Swift measures have been initiated to address the situation and safeguard public health.

In response to the concerns raised by international food regulators, the Indian government has directed food commissioners nationwide to collect samples of spices from all manufacturing units across the country. This proactive step aims to ensure the safety and integrity of Indian spices, a vital component of the nation's culinary heritage.

Top government sources have confirmed that the process of sample collection has commenced, with all food commissioners alerted and instructed to gather samples from spice manufacturing units nationwide within the next three to four days. The comprehensive scope of this sampling initiative extends beyond MDH and Everest brands, encompassing all spice manufacturing companies operating in the country.

The urgency of the government's response stems from reports indicating the presence of ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen, in certain spice products. The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) in Hong Kong identified ethylene oxide in three MDH products and Everest's Fish Curry Masala, prompting immediate action to halt sales and remove affected products from shelves.

Ethylene oxide, classified as a 'Group 1 carcinogen' by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, poses serious health risks and is strictly prohibited for use in food items in India. The government has underscored its commitment to enforcing stringent regulations and taking legal action against any harmful substances found in Indian spices.

As MDH and Everest Foods are yet to provide official statements regarding the contamination claims, consumers remain vigilant, awaiting further developments. Meanwhile, the Indian government continues to prioritize public health and safety, ensuring thorough investigations to uphold the integrity of the nation's food supply.
